Vlad the Impaler - The Prince Behind the Dracula Myth
Start here because Vlad shows a reputation being built by other people, mostly his enemies. A Wallachian prince held hostage by the Ottomans as a boy, ruling a small territory squeezed between Hungary and the Sultan, who used mass impalement as terror and as policy. German pamphlets made him a monster in print within his own century. Bram Stoker took the name Dracula in 1897 and the man disappeared behind it.
