What is in the book
He was born the son of a cobbler in a small Georgian town, and he trained to be a priest. He ended up as the dictator of the Soviet Union, and he signed the lists of people to be shot himself.
Joseph Stalin was the man his rivals underestimated. They saw a plodding clerk. He saw a card index of the whole Communist Party, and he used it to outlast Trotsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev and Bukharin, then to destroy them.
This Turbo History short tells his story straight, from the archives and the regime's own paperwork:
- The seminary boy who became Koba, the bank raid in Tiflis, and the rumour of a police informer that has never been proved
- Lenin's testament, "Stalin is too rude", and how he kept his chair anyway
- Collectivisation, the famine that killed millions, and the argument over the Holodomor
- The Great Terror, Order No. 00447 and the lists he signed by hand
- The pact with Hitler, 22 June 1941, Stalingrad, and the bargaining at Yalta
- The last night at the dacha, the doctors called too late, and the grave that was moved
He had once moved his own birthday. In the end, the country moved his grave.
