What is in the book
He was an asthmatic Argentine medical student who could barely breathe at night. He became the most famous revolutionary in the Americas, and then a face on a T-shirt.
Ernesto Guevara grew up wheezing in the hills of Cordoba, set off across South America on a motorcycle that kept breaking down, and watched a reforming government fall in Guatemala. In Mexico City he met Fidel Castro and signed on to invade an island he had never seen. He went as the expedition's doctor. He did not stay a doctor for long.
This Turbo History short tells his story straight, from Rosario to the schoolhouse at La Higuera:
- The Granma, the disaster of the landing, and the war in the Sierra Maestra that ended with Batista fleeing on New Year's Day 1959
- The prosecutor, the banker who signed the banknotes "Che", and the minister whose economic plans ran into reality
- The missile crisis, the speech at the United Nations, and the Algiers speech that accused the socialist countries
- The two last campaigns, in the Congo and in Bolivia, and the order given on 9 October 1967
- What the rest of the world was doing from 1928 to 1967, from the Great Leap Forward to the end of empire in Africa
- The record his admirers prefer to skip: the firing squads at La Cabana and the camp at Guanahacabibes
He wanted a world where money no longer mattered. He ended up as one of the best-selling faces of the twentieth century.
